History
Founded in 1808
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Madison was created by Mississippi Territory as a non-county area in 1808, then became a county in Alabama Territory in 1817 when Alabama Territory was formed from Mississippi Territory. The county gained and lost territory multiple times in its early years, including areas from Jackson County in 1826 and 1836, and losing land to the creation of Limestone, Morgan, and Marshall counties.
