History
Formed in 1818 from Madison County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Originally called Cotaco, the county was created by Alabama Territory from Madison County and Non-County Area 1. It was renamed Morgan in 1821, after Daniel Morgan. The county's boundaries changed over time, losing territory to Marshall County in 1840 and to Cullman County in 1877.
