History
Formed in 1819 from Marengo County and Tuscaloosa County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Greene County was created on December 13, 1819, from Marengo and Tuscaloosa counties. Over the next several decades, its boundaries shifted through exchanges with neighboring counties: it gained territory from Perry in 1820, from Pickens in 1843 and 1867, and from Tuscaloosa in 1864, and lost land to the creation of Hale County in 1867 and to a boundary adjustment with Hale in 1881.
