History
Founded in 1815
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Monroe County was created by Mississippi Territory from non-county area in 1815. When Alabama Territory was separated from Mississippi Territory in 1817, Monroe County became part of Alabama Territory. Over the following decades, Monroe County lost land through the creation of neighboring counties: Montgomery in 1816, Dallas in 1818, Conecuh in 1818, Baldwin, Butler, and Wilcox in 1819, and Clarke in 1821 and 1829.
