History
Formed in 1821 from Henry County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Covington County was created from Henry County on December 7, 1821. Over its first decades, the county lost territory to the creation of Dale County in 1825 and Crenshaw County in 1866, and gained and lost small areas from neighboring counties including Butler, Pike, Escambia, and Conecuh. In 1868, the county was briefly renamed Jones County before being renamed Covington County that same year.
