History

Formed in 1850 from Walker County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Winston County was created from Walker County on February 12, 1850, and was originally named Hancock. The county was renamed Winston in 1858, after John A. Winston. Winston lost territory to the creation of Cullman County in 1877 and exchanged land with Walker County in 1901.
