History

Formed in 1868 from Fayette County, Marion County and Jones County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Lamar County was created on October 8, 1868, from Fayette and Marion counties, with boundaries identical to those of the now-extinct Jones County. In 1877, Sanford County was renamed Lamar, after Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar.
