History
Formed in 1812 from Washington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Clarke County was created on December 10, 1812, by Mississippi Territory from Washington County. When Alabama Territory was created from Mississippi Territory on March 3, 1817, Clarke became a county in the new territory. Over the following decades, Clarke exchanged and gained small areas with neighboring counties Monroe and Wilcox, with the most recent adjustment occurring around 1901.
