History

Formed in 1830 from Monroe County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Lowndes County was created on January 30, 1830 from Monroe County. The county was named after William Lowndes. In 1831, Lowndes gained territory from Madison, Rankin, and Wayne counties. In 1833, six new counties—Carroll, Choctaw, Kemper, Noxubee, Oktibbeha, and Winston—were created from Lowndes.
