History

Formed in 1828 from Hempstead County and Miller County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Created by Arkansas Territory on November 1, 1828, from Hempstead and Miller counties, Sevier County initially included part of present-day Texas. Over time, the county's boundaries shifted significantly: it lost territory to Miller in 1829, gained land from Hot Spring in 1833, and was reduced further by the creation of Polk County in 1844, Little River County in 1867, and Howard County in 1873. In 1897, Sevier County regained territory from Howard County.
