History
Formed in 1819 from Arkansas County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Hempstead County was created on June 1, 1819 by the Missouri Territory from Arkansas and non-county area, initially including territory in present Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It became a county in Arkansas Territory on July 4, 1819, when the United States created Arkansas Territory from Missouri Territory. Between 1820 and 1833, Hempstead County lost territory through the creation of Miller, Lafayette, Sevier, Union, and Pike counties.
