History
Formed in 1851 from Crawford County, Scott County and Polk County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Sebastian County was created from Crawford, Scott, and Polk counties in 1851. In 1861, the county lost territory to Scott County and a small area to Polk County. By 1887 and 1890, Sebastian exchanged small areas with Franklin and Scott counties as boundaries were adjusted. In 1905, Congress approved an act that gave Sebastian County approximately 130 acres from Indian Territory along the Poteau River, which became part of Oklahoma.
