History
Formed in 1826 from Independence County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Izard County was created by Arkansas Territory from Independence County, with the act passing on October 27, 1825, and taking effect on January 1, 1826. The county gained territory from Crawford County in 1827 and exchanged lands with Non-County Area 3 (former Cherokee Lands) in 1828. Between 1831 and 1838, Izard County lost territory to the creation of Washington, Conway, Van Buren, Carroll, and Searcy (now Marion) counties through a series of boundary adjustments and exchanges. The county became part of the state of Arkansas on June 15, 1836.
