History

Formed in 1836 from Washington County and Tallahatchie County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Tunica County was created in 1836 from Washington County and Non-County Area 12, which was attached to Tallahatchie County. The county was named after the Tunica-Biloxi people. Tunica County experienced several boundary changes over its first decades: it lost territory to Panola County in 1841 and to Coahoma County in 1842 and 1844, but gained territory from Coahoma in 1848 and from Panola in 1871. The county lost additional territory to Tate County in 1876 and to the newly created Quitman County in 1877.
