History

Formed in 1833 from Lowndes County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Oktibbeha County was created from Lowndes County on December 23, 1833. The county lost territory in 1871 when the legislature created Colfax (now Clay) County, an action that required the governor's veto to be overridden and was passed again in 1872. Further territory was lost to Sumner County, now called Webster, in 1875.
