History

Formed in 1809 from Wilkinson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Amite County was created on February 24, 1809, by Mississippi Territory from Wilkinson County. It was named after the Amite River. The county experienced multiple boundary changes in its early decades, losing and gaining territory through the creation of neighboring counties Franklin, Marion, and Lincoln between 1809 and 1873.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
