History
Formed in 1802 from Jefferson County and Washington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Claiborne County was created by the Mississippi Territory from Jefferson County and Washington County on January 27, 1802, and was named after William C. C. Claiborne. Three days later, a boundary adjustment with the Choctaw Indian boundary removed Claiborne's eastern extension and eliminated overlap with Washington County.
