Choctaw County was created December 23, 1833, from Lowndes, Madison, Monroe, and Non-County Area 11 attached to Holmes, with Non-County Area 13 created from Monroe and attached to Choctaw. In 1836, Choctaw lost Non-County Area 13 to the creation of Chickasaw County, and lost small areas to Chickasaw again in 1854.
