History

Formed in 1826 from Covington County and Wayne County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Jones County was created in 1826 from Covington County and Wayne County and named after John Paul Jones. In 1833, the county lost territory to the creation of Jasper, Neshoba, Scott, and Smith counties. The county was renamed Davis County in 1865, then renamed back to Jones County in 1869.
