History
Formed in 1811 from Amite County, Franklin County and Wayne County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Marion County was created by the Mississippi Territory on December 9, 1811, from Amite, Franklin, Wayne, and Non-County Area 1. The county was named after Francis Marion. Over its early decades, Marion County gained and lost territory through various boundary adjustments, including the creation of Lawrence, Pike, and Perry from its land, and later gaining and losing parts of Hancock County and Pearl County.
