History

Formed in 1816 from Gallatin County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

White County was created by the Illinois Territory from Gallatin County on February 1, 1816. When Illinois became a state in 1818, White County became a county in the state of Illinois. The county lost land to the creation of Franklin County in 1818, Jefferson County in 1819, and Hamilton County in 1821. In 1854, White County gained land back from Gallatin County.
