History

Formed in 1829 from Shelby County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Macon County was created from Shelby County and was named after Nathaniel Macon. Over the following decades, the county's boundaries shifted as new counties were carved from it: De Witt County in 1839, Piatt County in 1841, and Moultrie County in 1843. In 1839, Macon County also gained land from Sangamon County.
