History

Formed in 1821 from Bond County and Madison County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Montgomery County was created on February 12, 1821, from Bond and Madison counties. The county was named after Richard Montgomery. In 1827, Montgomery gained territory from Fayette County, but lost land in 1839 to the creation of what is now Christian County.
