History

Formed in 1827 from Henry County, Mercer County and Putnam County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Jo Daviess County was created on February 17, 1827, from Henry, Mercer, and Putnam Counties. The county lost territory multiple times in the 1830s as new counties were created from its land, including Rock Island in 1831, Ogle, Whiteside, and Winnebago in 1836, Stephenson in 1837, and Carroll in 1839.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
