History

Formed in 1839 from Sangamon County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Menard County was created from Sangamon County on February 15, 1839, and named after Pierre Menard. The county lost territory to the creation of Mason County in 1841, then gained land back from Sangamon County in 1843 and 1847.
