History
Formed in 1814 from Gallatin County and Madison County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Edwards County was created by the Illinois Territory on November 28, 1814, from Gallatin County and Madison County, and originally included parts of present-day Wisconsin, Michigan, and Indiana. Through boundary adjustments with Indiana and the creation of new counties, Edwards lost territory in 1816, 1818, and 1819, eventually reducing to its present boundaries when Illinois became a state in 1818.
