History

Formed in 1812 from Randolph County and Johnson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

The county was created on September 14, 1812 by the Illinois Territory from Randolph and Johnson counties. It was named after Albert Gallatin. Gallatin became part of the state of Illinois on December 3, 1818, when Illinois was created from the Illinois Territory. Over the next few decades, the county lost territory to the creation of Edwards, White, Pope, Franklin, and Hardin counties, and briefly gained and lost Saline County.
