History

Formed in 1818 from Johnson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Union County was created by the Illinois Territory from Johnson County, with part of Johnson County attached to Union for administrative and judicial purposes. When Illinois became a state later that year, Union became a county in the state of Illinois. In 1819, the attached territory was lost when Alexander County was created.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
