History
Formed in 1821 from Madison County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Greene County was created from Madison County on January 20, 1821. It was named after Nathanael Greene. Over its early decades, the county experienced boundary changes, losing territory to the creation of Morgan County in 1823, to Madison in 1825, to Macoupin County in 1829, to Jersey County in 1839, and exchanging territory with Jersey County in 1851.
