History

Founded in 1785

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Marlboro County was created on March 12, 1785, within Cheraws District. In 1800, Marlboro District was created from Cheraws District with the same boundaries as the county, and judicial districts became the principal administrative subdivisions until 1868. When South Carolina's new constitution abolished all judicial districts on April 16, 1868, Marlboro County continued and assumed all functions of local government.
