History
Founded in 1785
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Darlington County was created on March 12, 1785, within Cheraws District. In 1800, Darlington District was created from Cheraws District with the same boundaries, and between 1800 and 1868 judicial districts served as the principal administrative subdivisions of the state while counties remained mostly geographical references. When a new state constitution abolished all judicial districts in 1868, Darlington County continued and took on all functions of local government. The county experienced multiple boundary changes: it lost territory to the creation of Florence County in 1888, regained and confirmed boundaries in 1889, and lost area to the creation of Lee County in 1902.
