History
Formed in 1898 from Darlington County, Kershaw County and Sumter County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Lee County was created on February 19, 1898, from parts of Darlington, Kershaw, and Sumter counties. The creation was ruled unconstitutional and the county was eliminated in January 1899, with its territory reverting to the three original counties. Lee County was re-created on February 25, 1902, again from Darlington, Kershaw, and Sumter. Over the following decades, the county experienced minor boundary adjustments, losing area to Sumter in 1914 and exchanging small parcels with Kershaw in 1921 and 1925.
