History

Formed in 1882 from Charleston County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Berkeley County was created from Charleston County in 1882 and named after Sir William Berkeley. The county lost territory to Charleston, Dorchester, and Orangeburg counties through several boundary adjustments between 1893 and 1962.
