History
Founded in 1785
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Union County was created within Ninety-Six District in 1785, then became part of Pinckney District in 1791. In 1800, Union District was created from Pinckney District with the same boundaries as Union County, serving as a judicial subdivision until 1868, when the state abolished all judicial districts and Union County assumed full functions of local government. In 1897, Cherokee County was created from Union County territory.
