History
Formed in 1791 from Claremont County, Fairfield County, Lancaster County and Richland County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Kershaw County was created February 19, 1791, from Claremont, Fairfield, Lancaster, and Richland counties. In 1800, Kershaw District was established with the same boundaries as the county, and between 1800 and 1868, judicial districts were the principal administrative subdivisions of the state. When the state adopted a new constitution in 1868, Kershaw District was eliminated and Kershaw County took on all functions of local government. The county had several boundary changes over the next century involving the creation and recreation of Lee County, as well as exchanges with Lancaster County.
