History
Formed in 1786 from Spartanburg County and Laurens County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Greenville was formed on March 22, 1786 from non-county areas attached to Spartanburg and Laurens counties. In 1791 it became part of the newly created Washington District, and in 1800 Greenville District was created with the same boundaries as the county. When South Carolina adopted a new constitution in 1868, judicial districts were abolished and Greenville County took on all local government functions.
