History
Formed in 1785 from Lexington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Newberry County was formed from territory that included parts of what would become Lexington County, with disputes over their shared boundary lasting until 1788. In 1800, Newberry District was created with the same boundaries as the county, and between then and 1868, judicial districts served as the principal administrative divisions of the state. When South Carolina adopted a new constitution in 1868, the judicial district was eliminated and Newberry County assumed all local government functions. Newberry gained territory from Lexington County on three occasions: in 1901, 1920, and 1953.
