History
Formed in 1779 from Anson County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Richmond County was created from Anson County in 1779. The county's territory changed in 1796 and 1797 when land was lost to and then regained from Robeson County. In 1899, Scotland County was created from Richmond County, and Richmond lost that territory.
