History

Founded in 1785

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

York County was created within Camden District on March 12, 1785. In 1791, it lost territory to the newly created Lancaster County and became part of Pinckney District. York District was established in 1800 from Pinckney District with the same boundaries as the county, and remained the principal administrative subdivision until 1868. When South Carolina's new constitution abolished judicial districts in 1868, York County assumed all local government functions.
