History
Founded in 1785
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Spartanburg County was created on March 12, 1785, within Ninety-Six District, and former Cherokee lands were initially attached to it. On March 22, 1786, those former Cherokee lands were detached and became part of Greenville County. In 1800, Spartanburg District was created from Pinckney District with the same boundaries as the county, and it became the principal administrative subdivision until 1868. In 1897, territory was lost to the creation of Cherokee County.
