History

Founded in 1800

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Sumter District was eliminated and became Sumter County in 1868 when South Carolina's new state constitution abolished all judicial districts, and Sumter County assumed all functions of local government. The county experienced several boundary changes with Lee County between 1898 and 1902, including a temporary regain of lost territory when a state supreme court ruling found Lee's creation unconstitutional, followed by multiple adjustments with Clarendon County in the 1920s.
