History

Founded in 1764

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Beaufort District became Beaufort County in 1868 when South Carolina's new state constitution abolished all judicial districts. The county lost territory to the creation of Hampton County in 1878 and Jasper County in 1912, though it later gained small areas from Jasper County in 1916, 1939, and experienced a final loss to Jasper in 1951.
