History
Founded in 1785
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Laurens County was created within Ninety-Six District and named after Henry Laurens. In 1786, former Cherokee lands were detached and became part of Greenville County, and the county lost additional territory to Greenville in 1792. The county transitioned from operating as a judicial district between 1800 and 1868 to resuming full local government functions when the state abolished all judicial districts in 1868.
