History
Founded in 1785
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Chesterfield was created within Cheraws District on March 12, 1785. In 1800, Chesterfield District was created from Cheraws District with the same boundaries as the county, and for most of the 19th century judicial districts served as the main administrative divisions while counties remained largely geographical references. When South Carolina's new constitution abolished all judicial districts on April 16, 1868, Chesterfield County continued and took on all local government functions.
