History

Founded in 1854

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Washington County was created by proclamation of the acting governor of Nebraska Territory from non-county area on November 23, 1854. Over the following two decades, the county exchanged land with Dodge County multiple times and gained and lost territory to Burt and Douglas counties.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
