History
Formed in 1856 from Blackbird County, Izard County, Stanton County and McNeale County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Dixon County was created on January 26, 1856, by Nebraska Territory from the extinct counties Blackbird and McNeale, as well as from Izard (now Stanton) and non-county area. The county gained and lost territory several times: it lost land to the creation of Cedar County in 1857, but regained it in 1860, and gained territory from Dakota and Wayne counties in 1858 and 1873 respectively. In 1858, part of Dixon reverted to non-county area within the Omaha Indian Reservation, and in 1873 the county gained the Winnebago Indian Reservation, formerly part of the Omaha Indian Reservation.
