History

Formed in 1857 from Pierce County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally named L'Eau Qui Court when created by Nebraska Territory from Pierce County in 1857, the county was renamed Knox in 1873. The county gained territory from Cedar County in 1860 and from Non-County Area in 1883, and temporarily administered Holt County for judicial and election purposes before Holt's full organization in 1876.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
