History

Founded in 1867

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Cheyenne County was named after the Cheyennes. It was attached to Lincoln County for judicial and revenue purposes in 1869, then fully organized and detached from Lincoln in August 1870. In 1888, Cheyenne County lost territory to the creation of Banner, Deuel, Kimball, and Scotts Bluff counties, and in 1908 it lost more territory to the creation of Morrill County.
