History
Formed in 1857 from Dixon County and Pierce County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cedar County was created by Nebraska Territory from Dixon and Pierce counties on February 12, 1857. The county was named after Juniperus virginiana, commonly known as eastern red cedar. In 1860, Cedar lost territory to Dixon, Knox, and Pierce when boundaries were adjusted to public land survey lines, and lost additional land to Pierce in 1875.
