History

Formed in 1862 from West County, L'Eau Qui Court County and Knox County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Holt County was created by Nebraska Territory in 1862 from Non-County Area 1 and all of West County, which was then eliminated. Initially not fully organized, Holt County was attached to L'Eau Qui Court County (now Knox) for judicial, revenue, and election purposes. Holt County became fully organized and independent in 1876, when it was detached from Knox County.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
